Background
[edit]Road accidents leading to high numbers of casualties had been common in Latin America in recent years, especially involving buses:[2]
- In March 2015, a tourist bus fell into a ravine in the southern state of Santa Catarina, Brazil, causing 54 deaths;
- In December 2015, a bus carrying frontier police plunged off a bridge in Rosario de la Frontera, northern Argentina, resulted in 43 fatalities;[3]
- In January 2018, 51 people were killed in Peru when a bus carrying 57 passengers went over a cliff after being struck by a tractor trailer while en route from Huacho to capital Lima;
- In August 2018, a bus collided with an SUV east of Quito, capital of Ecuador, killing 24 of the 38 passengers;[4]
- On January 3, 2025, a bus fell into a ravine in Nariño Department, western Colombia, killing 13 and injuring 30.[5]
- On February 8, two days nine days after, a collision between a bus and a trailer truck on the Escárcega–Villahermosa highway in Mexico killed 41 people;[6]
- On February 10, seven days after, a bus fell off a bridge over the Las Vacas River in Guatemala City, killing at least 55 people.
Bolivian transportation kills 1,400 people per year on average.[1]
Crash
[edit]The bus was driving on mountainous route with many twists and turns in the Yocalla Municipality, Potosí Department, Bolivia on 17 February 2025.[7] Officials said the vehicle plunged almost 800 metres (2,600 ft) into a ravine possibly due to high speed, after the driver lost control. Spokesman for the Potosí Police Command Limber Choque confirmed that the bus, owned by the San José transport company, covered the Potosí–Oruro route and indicated that the accident occurred on a mountain road full of curves.[8]
The crash killed 31 people. The dozens of injured people included ten adults and four children who were hospitalized, several with severe injuries and in intensive care.[7]
